Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese Remedial Therapy which means "finger pressure". However the practitioner may use thumbs, hands, arms, elbows, knees and even feet to apply gentle yet firm pressure. Holding, stretching and range of motion techniques are also used to assess, relax, harmonise and balance the flow of life energy (Chi) through the body.
A typical treatment may include pulse, tongue or Hara (abdomen) diagnosis and may also incorporate Acupressure.
Devotees of Shiatsu will tell you it is the ultimate stress buster and can assist in the treatment of many conditions and disorders. A Shiatsu treatment is traditionally carried out on a Futon mat over loose comfortable clothing. It is often combined with Acupressure to increase its efficacy.
